#ScoutsClapforCarers and Hike to the Moon
On the 23rd April (Thursday this week) it is St. George's Day. Traditionally Scouts have always gathered to renew their Scout Promise. But this year, of course, it will be different as we cannot parade through the town and meet together in our Cathedral.
Instead, we thought that it would be great if the whole Group got together and joined in with two national initiatives that are taking place on Thursday.
#ScoutsClapforCarers
For those of you that are taking part in the 8pm Clap for Carers, we would like you to do so this week in your uniform (or at least in your hoodie and necker). Take a look up and down your street and wave to other Beavers, Cubs and Scouts that you can see. Post a photo in our Facebook group.
Scouts Hike to the Moon
We are also going to take part in a national Scout initiative to 'Hike to the Moon' in support of the BBC Big Night In. The idea is for everyone to walk one mile. We would like to get as many of our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts as possible doing this together after the Clap for Carers on Thursday night. We will set up a Zoom meeting that you can all join so that we can do it together.
You can help the effort to Hike to the Moon and support the Big Night In by recording your miles and making your donation.
It took the Apollo XI crew three days to reach the Moon – let’s see how long it takes Scouts!
What you need to do:
Thursday 23rd April
1. Work out how you can walk a mile: e.g. measure your living room, staircase, garden, etc.
2. Wear your uniform if you are taking part in the Clap for Carers and 8pm
3. After the Clap for Carers, join our Zoom meeting if you wish and walk your mile
4. Click on this link to record your mile
5. Click on this link to make a donation if you would like.
6. Post a photo on our FaceBook group so that we can all share in the fun.
Here is the information about the event from our Chief Scout -
We're going to Hike to the Moon (and make things a little better back here on Earth).
Will you help us? All you need to do is hike a mile at home and make a donation – together, our miles will add up to one giant leap that supports the people who need it most.
On 23 April, BBC Children in Need and Comic Relief are getting together for the Big Day In (on radio), and the Big Night In on BBC1 from 7pm. They’ll celebrate the people making a difference across the UK and fundraise to support the people most affected by the coronavirus crisis.
We’ve come up with a way for Scouts to get involved too. We’re asking young people, volunteers, parents, and carers to hike just one mile each – we’ve done the maths, and it’s about 2,000 steps or 20 minutes walking on the spot.
You can hike around your home or garden (if you’re lucky enough to have one) but please be safe and follow government advice – you don’t need to leave your home to take part.
Let's see how many miles the 7th can contribute to this moon shot!
